ÅA Biomass Pretreatments and Fractionation Technology (4 ECTS)
ORGANISING UNIT
Laboratory of Fibre and Cellulose Technology, Åbo Akademi University
DATE AND PLACE
Fall 2012, Åbo Akademi University
LECTURER
Prof. Pedro Fardim
COURSE TYPE
Intensive course, written exam, home assignment.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Aim
To give the students advanced understanding of the biomass (wood and annual plants) as a raw material, different pre-treatment concepts, fractionation theories, the technology to prepare bio-based products and the tools for their characterisation. New concepts for biomass utilization are discussed from a chemical, physical and technological approach.
Learning objectives
After the course is finished the student is expected to be able to define the basic principles for production of bio-based products from biomass as well as to be able to distinguish the potentials and the limits of the raw materials for biomass. The critical evaluation of current and prospective technologies and identification of suitable characterisation methods are also expected.
COURSE LITERATURE
Will be distributed during the course.
