DATE AND PLACE
Fall 2012, University of Jyväskylä
LECTURER
Prof. Raimo Alén
COURSE TYPE
Intensive course
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The purpose of the course is to give the student principles of wood and pulping chemistry. Also various chemical and thermochemical conversion methods to utilise wood and other biomass feedstocks are reviewed. The course is divided into following parts: introduction to the chemistry of wood constituents (polysaccharides, lignin and extractives), the chemistry of wood pulping (kraft and sulphite pulping) and pulp bleaching (lignin-removing and lignin-preserving bleaching), and wood-based chemicals and pulping by-products.
